Division: special features of the 6x table

Is 198 divisible by 6? Wow your friends and look really smart - there is a little trick to this, and an easy way to find out...

Test one - is it an EVEN number?

Six is an even number, so no matter how many sixes you collect together, the total is always going to be an even number. If it is an even number then there is hope that it is divisible by 6...

Test two - add the individual digits of the number together

If the number is divisible by 6, its individual digits, when added together, will ALWAYS be either 3, 6 or 9

Try it for yourself:

Is 36 divisible by 6?

3 + 6 = 9

Yes!

Is 33 divisible by six?

NO - it is an odd number

Is 50 divisible by 6?

5 + 0 = 5

NO - it is an odd number

Is 270 divisible by 6?

2 + 7 + 0 = 9

Yes!

If the numbers are larger, don't panic, just keep adding. For example

Is 198 divisible by 6?

1 + 9 + 8 = 18.

This is two digits, so keep adding them together

1 + 8 = 9

Yes!

This "quick check" is not without a point. Imagine how useful it could be for double checking a long division answer or quickly eliminating possible answers to a question.
